![]() in the framework of common grant applications (including BMBF, BFS, NIH), and performs contract research for Biotech Companies and the Pharmaceutical Industry. MWM Biomodels supports projects of academic institutions, e.g. In particular, MWM Biomodels is closely collaborating with the Center for Innovative Medical Models (CiMM), a unique research center for the development of translational animal models at LMU Munich. The spectrum of phenotypic profiling is continuously expanded, mainly in collaboration with academic institutions. MWM Biomodels has unique expertise in the generation and phenotypic characterization of genetically tailored porcine disease models, particularly for pathophysiological studies of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and for monogenic diseases, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Laron syndrome (growth hormone receptor deficiency). In this respect, pigs are excellent candidates to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical trials. Thus, animal models mimicking human anatomy and physiology more closely are urgently required. Rodents are the most popular, but findings in rodents are in many disease areas very different from those in human patients. Relevant animal models are critically important for the discovery of key disease mechanisms, targets for medical interventions and subsequent development of new therapies. Consequently, “translational medicine” became a top priority. The translation of novel discoveries from basic research to clinical application is a long, often inefficient and costly process. MWM Biomodels GmbH is a spin-off company of the LMU Munich and Minitube, specialized in the development and characterization of genetically engineered large animal models for biomedical research.Ĭurrent projects are focused on the development, characterization and implementation of genetically tailored pigs as disease models (diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, rare monogenic diseases) and as tissue donors for xenotransplantation. ![]()
